CERTIFICATE OF ORIGIN - CO

What is Certificate of Origin?

Certification

A Certificate of Origin is a document issued for international trade.

A Certificate of Origin  declares from what country the shipped goods originate, the country where the goods are actually made.

When countries unite in trading agreements, they may allow Certificate of Origin to state the trading bloc as origin, rather than the specific country.

For example if goods were produced in European Union, in the Certificate of Origin it may be stated as CE.

The Certificate of Origin  may be informal, issued by the exporter, but often the importing country may require a formal document, often to be confirmed by an official body in the exporting country.

Certificate of Origin - CO

Certificate of Origin

A preferential certificate of origin is a document attesting that goods in a particular shipment are of a certain origin under the definitions of a particular trade agreement.

This certificate is required by a countries customs authority in deciding whether the imports should benefit from preferential treatment in accordance with special trading areas or customs unions.

Some destinations require a Certificate of Origin (CO) for specific products.

The purpose of the CO is to authenticate the country of origin of the goods being shipped.

The Certificate of Origin  may be required because of established treaty, varying duty rates, and preferential duty treatment dependent on the shipment´s origin.

However the rules for when a CO is needed change often. So it is recommended to verify the requirements of Certificate of Origin for specific goods in the Chamber of Commerce.

In most countries Chambers of Commerce are the key agents in the delivery of certificates of origin.
Nevertheless in some countries, this privilege may also be extended to the other industry groups.

Many countries require additional documents that identify the origin of products exported to them. This document states from which country a product comes. You use an EUR1 document for countries that have entered into trade agreements with the EU. This document gives a right to reduction of or exemption from import duties. You can request a EUR1 document from the Chamber of Commerce in one of the EU countries.
