DIVIDENDS
What is dividend?
A dividend is a payment made by a
company to its shareholders. Shareholders can be various
institutions or private persons who own a company’s
stock. This payment is made to the shareholders when a
company turns a profit and its managements decides to
use either all or some of this profit to pay its
shareholders. Dividends act as an incentive (return on
your investment) to own stock in a company that may
possibly not be experiencing much growth. The amount a
shareholder receives when a company issues dividends
depends entirely on the amount of shares he owns of that
particular company. The dividend issuing company pays a
small percentage of its earnings to the owner of each
share of stock.
High dividend stocks
The payment to the shareholders
is usually done in the form of cash, although some
companies offer the ability to automatically buy more
shares with the dividends. All companies have different
dividend policies – some pay dividends on a fixed
schedule while others do not follow any particular
time-line and instead pay dividends at any time they see
fit.

Stock dividends
Companies are in
no way obligated to pay dividends. The
management may also decide to re-invest
either all or some of the earnings back
into the company for further
development. Some corporations re-invest
all their profits back into the company,
this in turn increases the value of
their stock which enables their
shareholders to sell that stock for
possibly higher than what they bought it
for. Most corporations strike a balance
between the two.

Companies
paying a dividend
Most companies
pay dividends in order to keep their
shareholders, who are oftentimes simply
investors looking to make money, happy.
These are usually companies that have
developed beyond the growth stage, they
no longer experience the same rate of
growth that many younger starting
companies do through reinvesting all of
their earnings back into the company. By
paying dividends the company attempts to
generate demand for their shares and in
turn increase their price, which
naturally keeps its current investors
satisfied and willing to hold onto their
shares.
Guaranteed
dividends
One of the main
appeals of buying a company’s shares
that pays regular dividends is that it
is a relatively low-risk investment. Due
to the stable nature of most regular
dividend paying companies the investor
is able to rest easy in the knowledge
that the value of their initial
investment is unlikely to experience
significant drops over short periods of
time.
High dividends
Coupled with
the perspective of possible growth that
the company may experience, which in
turn increases the dividends paid and
the value of the shares, buying shares
of a stable company can be seen as a
good form of investment.

A dividend is a
manner in which a
company shares its
wealth, which it
generates out of the

Dividends are paid
to a shareholder on
a quarterly or half
yearly or on an
annual basis.
Dividends, by the

have to be mandatory
paid in cash as per
Section 205 (3) of
the Companies Act

another form of
dividend though not
termed, as dividend
is the issue of
bonus shares, which
for all financial
purposes is also a
proxy for dividends.
