Major gold producers are the South Africa, United States, Australia, China, Russia and Peru. In South America, the controversial project Pascua Lama aims at exploitation of rich fields in the high mountains of Atacama Desert, at the border between Chile and Argentina.

About one-quarter of the world gold output is estimated to originate from artisanal or small scale mining.

Like other precious metals, gold is measured by troy weight and by grams. When it is alloyed with other metals the term carat is used to indicate the amount of gold present, with 24 karats being pure gold and lower ratings proportionally less.

The price of gold is determined on the open market, but a procedure known as the Gold Fixing in London, originating in September 1919, provides a daily benchmark figure to the industry.

The price of gold on the open market has ranged widely, from a high of $850/oz on January 21, 1980, to a low of $252.90/oz on June 21, 1999. In January 2008 a new maximum price of $865.35 per troy ounce was established.

Since 2001 the gold price has more than tripled in its value and it continued to gain purchasing power for the next years.

International Gold Market

The gold standard called for fixed exchange rates, with parities set for participating currencies in terms of gold, and provided that any paper currency could on demand be exchanged for gold at the central bank of issue. In the foreign exchange market, under the gold standard, exchange rates could, in principle, fluctuate only within very narrow limits determined by the costs of shipping and insuring gold.
