Mutual funds benefits
The
benefits of investing into mutual
funds are numerous. You do not have
to research individual stocks,
bonds, futures, options, etc to pick
for your portfolio – this saves you
a lot of time. Knowledge of
investing and insight into markets,
although always recommended if you
are investing, is not required. It
also very easy to gauge the
performance of a mutual fund just by
looking at its ROI (return on
investment) over a period of time.
Do keep in mind however that the ROI
is largely dependent on the fund’s
risk factor – high risk funds can
have a high ROI but are also very
volatile, you can lose some of your
investment just as easily as
profiting from it, therefore it is
important to look at the ROI of the
fund in question over a period of a
few years. One final benefit of a
mutual fund is that it is
professionally managed by a
qualified organization (banks,
investment groups) or individual,
which is good news for those who do
not have the necessary knowledge,
experience and/or time needed to
manage their own investment
portfolio.
There
are however a few downsides to
investing into mutual funds as
opposed to doing it yourself. Most
mutual funds charge small annual
fees, some irrespective of the size
of your investment in the fund and
some relative to the size of your
investment. Another downside is that
you have no control over the fund’s
strategy – you cannot influence its
choice of stocks or other financial
instruments which is why it is
important to carefully read up on a
fund’s strategy prior to investing.
Finally, when picking a mutual fund
make sure it coincides with your
personal preferences. Are you risk
averse, content with relatively
small returns on your investment for
minimal risk? Or are you willing to
bear substantial risks for greater
profits? These are important things
to consider when looking for a
mutual fund in which to invest.
